THE IMPORTANCE OF Speaking

Public speaking enables leaders to express their ideas, establish trust, and motivate others. But for many high school students, the act of speaking publicly causes feelings of intense fear that stifle a student’s ability to passionately convey their message and inspire their audience.

Finding Your Voice is an in-school, public speaking workshop for high school students in Perth that aims to empowers students to excel in their communication. Students will gain confidence and tools for powerful public speaking in various settings, such as presentations, assemblies and debates. Led by comedian, MC and media personality Adrian Alaberg, this high-energy, hands-on, and interactive workshop teaches speaking and communication skills to high school student leaders who hope to inspire their peers and make a difference at their school and in their world.

TOPICS Covered

Finding Your Voice deals heavily with the number 1 barrier to effective public communication: fear.

In the Finding Your Voice public speaking workshops (and dedicated speech writing workshops) students learn to craft and structure their message optimally in order to influence their audience and gain the physical and verbal skills to present this message in a compelling way.

STRUCTURE OF THE Workshops

The Finding Your Voice student public speaking workshop is broken into three parts that constitute the before, during and after portions of speaking:

  • Addressing Fear and building confidence, preparing  and structuring a compelling presentation and note-writing.

  • Developing the physical and verbal skills for powerful and persuasive speaking

  • Strategies for review and creating ongoing improvement for lifelong speaking skills

Finding Your Voice's flagship 3hr half-day high school workshop introduces secondary students to the skills of powerful public speaking through a progressive process of learning, integrating and demonstrating. Through the public speaking workshop each student works toward delivering their own persuasive speech to the group at its conclusion. Along the way students learn persuasive writing techniques, engaging delivery skills and the ability to respond to live audience feedback in real time which they incorporate into their own presentation delivered at the workshop’s climax.

“There's nothing better than seeing a student considered by teachers to be typically quiet and shy, by the end of the workshop, to come out of their shell and present passionately, expressing themselves to their classmates for the first time. Finding Your Voice gives them the skills and confidence, opening a safe space for them to do just that, and they carry those skills for a lifetime.”
